  1. South Carolina was first settled by the English in 1670 along the Ashley
  2. River and Charleston in 1680.  In 1775 the colonists seized control, the
  3. monarchists fled, but took control of Charleston in 1780 and were defeated
  4. at Kings Mountain in the same year.  In the 1830s South Carolinians became
  5. angered by federal protective tariffs and they adopted the Nullification
  6. Doctrine giving authority to states to nullify any act of Congress.  South
  7. Carolina was the first state to cede from the union in 1861, captured Fort
  8. Sumter in Charleston Harbor and started the American Civil War.
